Are you?

Are you getting enough Fun in your life?

Because life should be fun.

Joy is your birthright.

But given the intensity of your life, given how many demands there are for your time, quality F doesn’t just happen.

It needs to be planned. It needs to be intentional.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama spoke about it this way:

“Starting every year, before I booked anything, agreed to any meetings or conferences, we’d sit down with my assistant and we looked at our lives first,” Obama said. “We put potlucks in there, we put date nights in there, I put my workouts, we put our vacations on the calendar first, we put sports things and summers. We planned that out first, and then what was left would be left for work.”

Likely, you’re not busy running the household that runs the free world. Which means that you could approach your life this way too!

It begins by being mindful and intentional.

What do you value?

What matters most?

What will you regret not doing when the sands of you life have slipped through the glass?

Get clear on those things.

Then get them on the calendar.

Your health and wellness. The adventures and vacations. The date nights. The getaways. The magic moments.

Make them appointments with yourself.

Then dial the work in around those things.

Not the other way around.

Because the sands will slip through the glass.

And there are no do overs.

Do you live to work? Or work to live?

You get to choose.

Choose to prioritize the F in your life.

Our fears, small and large, keep us from our very best lives.

Mine involved a rental car.

Our fears -even our silly, petty fears – never really disappear.

But the village squares, the grand vistas, the new relationships, optimal wellness, deeply satisfying careers… they’re all just beyond that place of comfort.

Being fearless doesn’t mean that you have no fear. It just means fearing LESS.

So… feel the fear. And know that you will find the way.

and there was a wheelchair accident

We lost a bright star this week. Stephen Hawking. One of the great luminaries of our age.

Despite his debilitating diagnosis of Lou Gehrig’s disease decades ago, Hawking stayed at the cutting edge of physics and astronomy, generating groundbreaking research on the cosmos and the origins of our universe. He was a prolific writer and speaker. He pushed the edges of humanity’s knowledge, and the boundaries of his own physical limitations.

And he wasn’t afraid to risk.

Hawking broke his leg in a high speed wheelchair accident on the streets of his home town. He soared in a hot air balloon. And in 2007, when he was 65, Hawking took part in a zero-gravity flight.

Asked why he took such risks, he said, “I want to show that people need not be limited by physical handicaps as long as they are not disabled in spirit.”

Hawking lived a big life.

Each one of us is called to live a big life. To step beyond our own obstacles and limitations. To get out of our own way. To go out in the world and share those gifts and talents that are uniquely ours to share.

The poet Rumi wrote, “You were born with potential. You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness. You were born with wings. Learn to use them and fly.”

Toward the end of his life, Hawking said, “Though as humans we’re bound to earth, we’re meant to fly with wings.”
